It’s a huge step up from Virtual PC. Though I’ll have more to say on VMware in general, this is about how I fixed a particular condition that stumped me for a number of hours, and for which there are no obvious single references that cover all the cases. The message occurs in the Virtual Network Editor when trying to assign one of the VMnet adapters to bridged, which allows it to share the same adapter and IP as the host: There are quite a few things that can provoke this, and I’ll try to detail all the ones I know about.

Some of them are legitimate quasi-misconfigurations, where VMware is doing what it’s told, though it’s not always obvious to us why this is. Disclaimer : I am not any kind of VMware expert, having only used it for a few months, but I spent enough time on this that I think I mostly have a handle on it. I had not changed any of the Workstation network configuration since I had installed it and always just used the defaults.

Clearly, Workstation thinks the adapters are already bridged despite there not being any listed in the virtual network editor. A thread over at the VMware Communities forum from back in offered a very simple suggestion — restore defaults.

It appears to go through a complete removal of all virtual networking components, including host virtual adapters and services and then re-deploys them from scratch. In my case I only used the defaults so this was perfect.

Once the process was completed, I was happy to see VMnet0 back in the list with the correct bridging configuration. Anyway, the snapshot isn’t for the files but the settings. It will allow you to delete one of the nics and test my theory about routing then if it doesn’t work, restore and you get all the settings back to before I helped! No change. Check my “Update 1” in the question. What does route show while it’s working versus not working?

If you open a cmd prompt and type “route print” it tells you where your packets are being sent and on what interface. Logs are the Windows system and application logs to see if something is spitting an error there about the interface or anything to do with networking. It needs to be updated just as well as any other machine.

Why downloading elsewhere and copying it there The major drawback is with SVN clients hanging indefinitely when this happens. I don’t like server product because it installs all kind of “crap” on machine. I don’t want web console and apache web server etc. The Wireless interface is briged to the guest OS. Also, I have never had Workstation successfully switch host adapters in Bridged Mode and the guest seamlessly keep network. What I mean is switching adapaters in a host OS on and off (since like you I had bridge auto-configure), and then ipconfig or ifconfig depending on OS. Cannot add second bridged adapter In an environment with multiple network cards, with the first VMnet adapter bridged, trying to make a second one bridge to the “other” adapter fails. This is often because the first one is bridged to both , in automatic bridging mode, and this can be fixed easily in the VNE: Highlight the first VMnet adapter, and change the “Bridged to: Automatic” setting to select the particular network adapter you want.

No bridging adapters seen at all The previous case showed that one VMnet adapter had “consumed” both adapters, leaving none left for another, but in this case we don’t see any bridging adapters at all. This is less obvious, but I’ve found a few things to try. First , make sure the VMware bridging driver is running, which you typically do at an Administrative command line. Find an icon for the Cmd window or PowerShell, right-click, then Run As Administrator, then start the driver: If the driver is already running, that means this wasn’t the issue, but in any case, close the Virtual Network Editor, re-open it, and try setting up the bridging again.

I use the “Host-only” NIC2 only for RDP so it works faster communicates inside my computer and not over to the router –Q: Is it possible to set priority for internet connection? Did you even try what I said? You should not loose anything as you are taking a snapshot.
